Earthbound, originally released in 1972, was one of the earliest (if not the first) \"official bootleg\" released by a major rock band, consisting of a series of deliberately lo-fi live recordings of King Crimson's Islands era line-up on tour in the USA. When issued, because of it's mid-price, it was excluded from the main album charts in the UK but topped the mid-price charts rubbing shoulders with Jim Reeves and Mantovani. Atlantic in the USA didn't even bother to release it. By then, the band had broken up and the label had already been alerted to the likelihood of a new King Crimson line-up promised for later in the year. Like the later live album, USA, Earthbound remained deleted on vinyl and unreleased on CD until both were finally released in 2002 on CD. An expanded CD\/DVD edition appeared in 2017 alongside the Sailors' Tales boxed set. Ironically this non-availability in the peak CD era served to enhance interest in the album while DGM's live releases made fans aware that there was a larger story to be told of this line-up's history. When Robert Fripp was asked to guest on the second Grinderman project, Nick Cave noted: \"I wanted to work with Robert Fripp because he has done some of the most uniquely unsettling guitar work I have ever heard along with some of the most delicate and finessed\" explained Cave. \"I grew up listening to a lot of the King Crimson stuff. The vinyl copy of the phenomenal live album Earthbound, is one of my most treasured possessions. \" With Robert Fripp and Mel Collins having both appeared in the 2014\/2021 line-ups and the Islands era material a regular feature of those live shows, interest in Earthbound and that era of King Crimson music is probably higher now, 50 years on from the original release, than it was at the time. Cut by Jason Mitchell at Loud Mastering from the restored masters of the original recordings used for the CD\/DVD release in 2017, the new vinyl version is still nobody's idea of a 'hi-fi experience'. Stylistically very different from the King Crimson of the 1970s, this new line-up incorporated rock with electronica, funk, pure pop, modern avant-garde, and a complex variety of musical textures and influences. 'Beat' (1982) was released just eight months after the quartet's recording of 'Discipline' and marked the first occasion where a KC line-up had remained intact for a two album stretch and the first album by the band to employ a separate producer - Rhett Davies. The album also charted upon release in the US and the UK with compositions such a 'Waiting Man', 'Neal and Jack and Me' and 'Heartbeat' becoming firm favorites with fans and concert goers. Taken together, these tracks represent both a beginning and an end of a tour that took place despite almost insurmountable issues. Originally scheduled for 2020, postponed for a full year because of the pandemic, the tour began in July 2021 in Florida as the latest Covid wave hit and the band moved across the country in a tour bus bubble. Following a two-week break due to scheduling conflicts, the band took to the road again, with the Zappa Band appearing nightly before Crimson. Now facing gigs that had to be moved due to extreme weather, with one venue flooded a day before a concert, an open-air venue in New York transferred to the more familiar Beacon Theatre, and even a band member flown to hospital via helicopter, King Crimson faced a range of challenging conditions. Happily, the band member fully recovered and no gigs were missed despite the array of setbacks and obstacles. By the time King Crimson reached Washington, the band was in ferocious form with a powerful, energetic set with some arrangements reworked and differing from previous tours. Featuring a restored middle section of 'Larks' Tongues In Aspic Part One' that had not been played since 1973, substantial keyboard arrangements, Tony Levin on upright bass during 'Neurotica' giving the piece an extra swing, an emotional Starless and an immensely powerful '21st Century Schizoid Man' as an encore. King Crimson completed their tour in style and to much acclaim from fans and critics alike. As Robert Fripp notes in his diary entry included in the notes: \"David (Singleton, KC manager\/producer), pointed out that the very first piece KC played in the US, at Godard College, Montpelier, Vermont on October 29th. 1969, was the same piece as completed KC's 52 years - 21CSM\". The four performances from the 'Friends and Family' concert in late August 2021 at The Egg in Albany, the opening show of the second leg of the tour and the same venue where the current band played it's first US gig in 2014, add material not played in Washington due to time constraints.
