He was a close friend of the Liddell family: Henry Liddell had many children and he was the Dean of the College. Carroll used to tell stories to the young Alice (born in 1852) and her two elder sisters, Lorina and Edith. One day-on 4 July 1862-Carroll went with his friend, the Reverend Robinson Duckworth, and the three girls on a boat paddling trip for an afternoon picnic on the banks of a river. On this trip on the river, Carroll told a story about a girl named Alice and her amazing adventures down a rabbit hole. Alice asked him to write the story for her, and in time, the draft manuscript was completed. After rewriting the story, the book was published in 1865, and since that time, various versions of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" were released in many various languages. In the nineteenth century, many stories of foreign lands were published in Hawaiian, such as "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas" and "Ivanhoe". "ʻĀleka" is a story of the nineteenth century, though it is not one of the foreign stories that were translated into Hawaiian in that era. Through nineteenth-century translations, Hawaiian readers were taught a great many things about various countries, such as animals not found in the Hawaiian Islands and various cultures and foreign tongues.

Author: Lewis Carroll
Publisher: Evertype
Published: 03/08/2017
Pages: 162
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.47lbs
Size: 8.50h x 5.50w x 0.37d
ISBN: 9781782011668
Language: Hawaiian

alice-in-wonderland-illustrated-alices-adventures-in-wonderland-through-the-looking-glass-and-the-hunting-of-the-snark-lewis-carroll-paperback
Alice in Wonderland (Illustrated): Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking-Glass, and The Hunting of the Snark -- Lewis Carroll, Paperback

This Top Five Classics edition of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland includes:

- The complete texts of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass
- John Tenniel's 92 original illustrations
- The Hunting of the Snark, with Henry Holiday's 10 original illustrations
- An informative introduction, author bio, and helpful notes

Originally written and hand-drawn from 1862 to 1864 by Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson) for 10-year-old Alice Liddell, the daughter of Dodgson's Oxford college dean, the manuscript "Alice's Adventures Under Ground" would become, with the help of John Tenniel's beautiful and humorous illustrations, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, published by Macmillan in 1865 in Britain and the U.S. The book, at turns silly and satiric, gentle and wild, would quickly become beloved around the world by children and adults, and spawn the classic sequel Through the Looking-Glass (1871) and the immortal nonsense poem The Hunting of the Snark (1876). Through her encounters with eccentric characters like the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, and the Queen of Hearts, Alice navigates a series of absurd and illogical events that challenge conventional understanding and reflect Carroll's fascination with logic and satire. Originally crafted to entertain the daughters of Carroll's friend Henry Liddell, the story playfully critiques Victorian norms and explores themes of identity, authority, and the curiosity of childhood. Reflecting Carroll's love for wordplay, logic puzzles, and satire, the book delves into themes of identity, transformation, and the fluidity of reality.
