Another challenge for Pops was the fact that the material was not his normal repertoire, meaning he had to learn things on the fly in the studio. The communication of musical concepts between Dave and Joe is extraordinary as they improvise boldly and respond to each other's fresh ideas. Gene Wright solos far more than usual on this album and his playing is a fitting tribute to the longest living member of the Quartet. (Gene died on December 30th, 2020.) Dave Brubeck plays masterfully revealing a rhythmic complexity to his approach on the piano that is remarkable and reminds the listener of his extremely inventive approach to jazz improvisations. Harmonically, he also explores polytonality in the most unexpected places; for example, on the ballad \"La Paloma Azul.\" On \"Swanee River\" Dave is playfully polyrhythmic. Dave's light touch on \"One Moment Worth Years\" is charming and gives a nod to the great more traditional pianists who went before him. On this great-sounding recording, you can hear the full breadth of Dave's playing which pushes jazz forward while honoring his past influences. Opening with \"St. Louis Blues,\" the set includes the rhythmically challenging, high-spirited \"Someday My Prince Will Come,\" and ends with \"Take the A Train\" as an encore. This is a thrilling set! Miles Davis had found ways of marrying jazz with classical ideas, then later R\u0026amp;B, rock and funk, producing hybrid offspring that shaped the course of popular music and had come to define his legend. In 1985, he'd left Columbia after thirty years to sign to Warner Bros. Records, a label riding high with best-selling artists like Madonna, Van Halen and Prince, with whom he had a mutual admiration and friendship. Miles Davis's lifelong love for France is well-documented, and in July 1991, he became a Knight of their Legion of Honour. Davis received the award from French culture minister Jack Lang, who described him as: \"The Picasso of jazz.\" A few days before, he played this electrifying set at the Vienne Jazz Festival with the Miles Davis Group. He passed away two months later in September 1991. The imagination quotient of this interpretation is off the charts. \"Mompouana\" is a most impressive circular tune surrounding the sweetness and light of Spalding's voice in a 9\/8 time signature, choppy piano motifs, upper to midrange drama, and thoughtful, intricate secondary lines. In their ultimate playful state, \"Perazuán\" and \"Perazela\" show Spalding's ability to scat, with Ortiz on the former and furiously alongside Mela on the latter track. The other covers are a darker-than-the-original rendition of Chick Corea's neo-bopper \"Humpty Dumpty\" and the personable, lighthearted \"Loro,\" written by Egberto Gismonti. \"Two Bad,\" with a feeling reminiscent of the standard \"Alone Together,\" is a brittle, quirky, and unpredictable tune that is the only instrumental of the lot. Spalding sings no lyric content whatsoever; her style is all natural, sensual, and precious. Whether she is coerced to sing songs in the future is to be determined.
