Claude Chabrol's taut thriller, based on a Ruth Rendell novel, tells of a French bourgeois family who hire the prim young Sophie (Sandrine Bonnaire) as their housekeeper. Trouble starts when Sophie befriends Jeanne (Isabelle Huppert), a local woman who has a hatred for the family, and the two form an intimate bond that leads to the unraveling of dark secrets and sinister impulses.
